This story about the disrepair of, and move to make a historic site of, John Coltrane's house in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood of Philadelphia raises some topics including what should qualify a place as worthy of the historic label (Coltrane? Yes), whether that should require its preservation (this label would not), and who should bear the responsibility for upkeep (owner? State? City? Private benefactors?). The additional issue with this one is that it's, well, on a block that isn't in the best shape, with other homes boarded up, but it IS directly across the street from the Fairmount Park driving range and adjacent to more gentrified Brewerytown. So, it's a little bit worn now, but it's right there in a place that might become more valuable down the line. I think a Coltrane museum would be great for that area, actually.
