Coronavirus has increased talk about vaccines, and while one topic from that involves the anti-vaxxers, another is about exactly how vaccines are tested, and this article is about the most fascinating and dangerous way these things are tested, when the scientists working on them test the vaccines on themselves. When it works -- Dr. Salk with the polio vaccine, for example -- it's great. When it doesn't, the doctors can die and have died. And it seems a bit on the crazy side to test a drug or vaccine on yourself, but so is asking for others to volunteer, and if you have faith in what you're doing, I guess it's a case of putting your money where your mouth is.
