Silence Isn't Always Golden
-
This BBC article explores something you might have even more reason to consider now that most of you are working from home: whether listening to music while working helps or hurts your production and the quality of your work. They've done research, and while a plurality of people THINK music helps them, the truth might be... no, not that it hurts. It's something called "activation theory," in which the brain needs a certain amount of stimulus to function effectively, and music provides it like a shot of caffeine. But it's not a direct cognitive boost, because it doesn't matter what kind of music you listen to or how long. And some scientists argue that music doesn't help you work better at all; you just tell yourself it does. The bottom line from all the research: It's mixed. It's different for different people. Do whatever you want. (BBC)
