There's Not Much Of A Market For Being Everything To Everyone Anymore
-
Nieman-Marcus' bankruptcy underscores something that may have been coming anyway but was accelerated by the pandemic: the death of the traditional department store. Really, all brick-and-mortar retail is hurting, but the big department stores may not survive this. (Macy's is rushing back and planning to open its stores in a matter of weeks; good luck with that.) Even if they do, the next few years are going to be rough, considering how much backed-up, unsold inventory they're going to have to sell at a steep discount or just dump. Will you miss 'em when they're gone, or had the appeal of Macy's and JC Penney gone away years ago? (NBC News)
