And They're Too Far From Civilization To Deliver

Another casualty of the pandemic is Baker, California, and this means something only if you've ever made the drive between L.A. and Las Vegas. Baker is, almost literally, the middle of nowhere, a strip of fast food and gas stations in the desert along the 15 freeway, teased by billboards for a hundred miles ("THE MAD GREEK, 32 MINS. BAKER"), home of the most disappointing roadside attraction in the world (the "World's Tallest Thermometer"), at the very spot where you'll inevitably decide you need to make a pit stop. It's your Carl's Jr. and bathroom stop on the way to Vegas or Death Valley. With nobody making the trip, Baker, which has no other means of support, was hurting. Most of the locally-owned joints had to close. Only a few national chain fast food places stayed open throughout. It's coming back now that Vegas is reopening, but Baker may have been the most desolate place in America for a few months. (Los Angeles Times)
