Ghost Downtown

Closed after just five years at the corner of Broad and Walnut smack in the middle of Center City Philadelphia is the big Wawa store, and before you say here-he-goes-again-about-Wawa, this has some application to everyone everywhere: The store's closing due to unspecified pandemic-related effects on business, but you can infer two things: One, the homeless problem and crime kept it from being open 24/7, but more to the point, Two, if the pandemic means fewer people are going to the office, what happens to the businesses in downtown areas catering to those workers? If nobody's commuting to Center City, what do the restaurants and shops and services there to serve those workers do? It's an economic problem nobody's addressing. (Philadelphia Inquirer)
