No, you're not imagining things: Based on the breathless reporting from conventions like CES over the years, we were supposed to have self-driving cars by now. In fact, I remember (being the skeptic in the room) telling people at CES almost a decade ago that the projections of having autonomous cars on the road and in general use within five years was fanciful at best. This article runs down the reasons why we don't have them yet, basically that they're not safe enough yet, the necessary infrastructure isn't ready, and there's the issue of liability. But they expect fleet vehicles to be on the road sooner than individually-owned versions. Again, I don't think we're ready and I don't think we WILL be ready for a long time yet.
