You buy a piece of electronic equipment, it works, and you expect it'll keep working. But what happens if the equipment relies on the manufacturer's software updates and server, and the manufacturer just abandons it? That's the dilemma facing users of Slingbox, a device which does something no other current device can do and which, while in some ways obsoleted by newer options, is still useful to some people: It takes what's on your cable box, including all the channels you pay for and all of your DVR shows, and lets you stream them to your phone or streaming stick or tablet wherever in the world you are. It's now owned by Dish, which wants you to pay them monthly for Sling TV, and so they're turning off the servers that make the things work in two years. (I used to use the Slingbox, but mine was obsoleted a few years ago.) But, still, everyone has a device they bought that ended up unusable even if it still worked. Anyone else have a Beta VCR?
