Survival Of The Not-Really-Fittest
-
If you went to college, you know what the "weed-out class" is: It's an early class in a STEM discipline that's designed specifically to weed out those who are ostensibly not fit to continue in that major, like, and I can speak about this from experience, second semester Organic Chemistry (pass it or you won't be in pre-med anymore). They're the "look at the person to your left, then to the right; one of you won't be here next semester" courses. And a study now says that your ability to survive a weed-out class is based less on your ability than it is on your social ties to classmates and your comfort in the class, which, they say, may be why so many women and POCs are "weeded out." And that right there is a problem. Your ability to pursue a science or tech career shouldn't end before it starts because you're in an alienating atmosphere. (New York Times)
