When Everyone Simultaneously Realizes They Don't HAVE To Live There Anymore
-
The other day, when I scoffed at a U-Haul survey that indicated people are fleeing high-population, high-cost states to move to low-tax Sunbelt states, I said I didn't see as much activity here in move-away-from-there California as those stories indicate. But maybe that's because I don't live up in the Bay Area, from which people in the tech industry are escaping, and, especially with remote work becoming the norm, they're moving to places like Austin, Savannah, and San Juan, where you can live for a lot less. What struck me about this article is how one guy who lived in Cupertino and moved to Austin said "you start to feel stupid" for staying in a place where rent and taxes are astronomical. And that raises the question: If you had to move from where you are now and wanted to live and work someplace else, where would you go? What would be the ideal place, financially and for the lifestyle? (New York Times)
