Big controversy at the Fabergé exhibition in Russia, where an art dealer is accusing the museum of displaying fakes among eggs and jewels borrowed from a billionaire's collection. Forget all that, because neither you nor your listeners care about Fabergé eggs. No, it's this: Do you know what you're looking at when you go to a museum? Really know? Say a painting or sculpture is a knockoff. Could you tell? If not, would you care? Not to advocate for fakes, and one of the great things about going to art museums is knowing the stuff you're looking at is real (hey, I went all the way to Florence to look at the real Michelangelo's David statue and it was awesome), but how many people in museums look at art and gravely nod their approval and really have no clue what it is they're looking at?
