On Second Thought, I'll Skip The Salad
-
Penn State scientists have found a type of caterpillar called the tomato fruitworm that not only eats tomatoes but secretes saliva on the tomato plant, which interferes with the plant's ability to cry for help, meaning... wait, hold on there. Plants cry for help? They feel? Yes, sort of. When they're under attack, they send out chemical distress signals, which are supposed to summon some sort of help, or at least signal other plants to be on guard, because plants can't really do much in the way of defense. Anyway, we know all of this and if you're a vegan or vegetarian, this has to be a little confusing. Really, it's confusing to everyone. (Philadelphia Inquirer)
