Better Very, Very, Very Safe Than Sorry

I live 26 miles from the center of Downey, CA, and I tell you that because on Thursday afternoon I got an emergency alert on my cell phone about a gas leak there. They ordered evacuations within a 300-foot radius. Let me repeat that: 300 feet. The alert went to everyone in L.A. County, apparently, despite 99.9% of the area being unaffected. They blame it on a mistake -- the city of Downey claims that they were testing the new EAS and inadvertently freaked out a lot of people. Shouldn't they have the cell phone alert system be more accurate and less mistake-prone by now? (KTLA-TV/Los Angeles)
