It has not gone unnoticed that Canadian country artists use a southern twang in their voices, even when they don't speak that way. It may not be conscious. It's a version of code shift: identities changing depending on who you're talking to and what the circumstances may be. It's always been this way, and one example they use is the Beatles, singing in something other than their Liverpudlian accents. Do you find yourself changing the way you speak depending on who the audience is? Let's say it this way: Do you have a "radio voice," and, if so, are you conscious of it when you're doing it? (CBC)
