The federal spending debate includes the proposal to spend on a child care program including preschool and day care, and what gets lost in the political weeds is how, in many cases, child care has become practically unaffordable, with parents spending more on it than on their mortgages at the same time teachers are being grossly underpaid and day cares and preschools can't find staffers. Yes, the proposal's expensive. But how else is this problem solvable? Other countries do it; why can't America? (New York Times)
