Dead: William H. Pflaumer. Who? The former head of Schmidt's beer/a>. He helped restore the brand to dominance in Philadelphia in the late 70's and early 80's -- they sponsored the Phillies, and it was on tap in every bar -- but went to prison for tax evasion as the whole thing unraveled and the brewery went under. Every city or region had its big brand of beer back in the day, whether it was Schmidt's or Natty Boh or Old Style or Stroh's or Iron City. Now, the few that are left are mostly just labels brewed under contract by the big megabreweries. Gone are the days of rolling into Roache's bar on Lancaster Avenue and grabbing a Roacheburger (great, despite the name) and 25-cent Schmidt's drafts, little glasses for a quarter that would do the job and leave you with intestinal distress later. At least, that's how I vaguely remember my early 20s.
