You don't think much about the cost of feeding prisoners, but it's high. They can't do bread-and-water, as much as everyone would like to see that. So they have to serve edible food, and some jails are trying to cut costs in that regard with no-frills food for jail detainees. They used to get food sent in by local restaurants for the people who got thrown in the holding cell. Now, they're trying the rough equivalent of the 7-Eleven burrito: microwave, pre-cooked, wrapped burgers or pizza, no condiments. They get the stuff delivered weekly, so nobody has to make a food run. Makes sense. If the food's any better, people will want to get arrested just for lunch. (Detroit Free Press)
