Okay, So It Wasn't The Best Career Choice After All
-
As a professional writer -- stop laughing, I get paid to write this swill -- it's painful to read about how more news organizations are filling their news holes not just with that cheap SEO content but with stuff written by wannabe writers for free. This article quotes one writer who's swallowed the "new media model" whole -- he's written 500 pieces on sports for a site that doesn't pay, and trusts that, someday, someone will pay him to write. But why would they since a) he writes for free, and b) what he writes is pretty much worth that amount? But as long as the free crap is out there, the paid crap... er, paid content is doomed. One good point made here: People talk about how the Huffington Post is all about people writing for free, but that's not why people go there. HuffPo's page views all come from rewritten celebrity gossip pages and SEO-friendly headlines, not the vanity stuff that nobody reads. (Advertising Age)
