Why did so many people wait until the last minute before filing to get or renew a U.S. passport before the big fee increase? There were long lines at passport offices and post offices on the final day of the old fees. Here's a confession: Fran needed to renew an expired passport and we waited, too, but with one exception. We made an appointment with the passport people at the library, filled out the form in advance, and showed up on the last day. Total time for the process: Five minutes. Maybe less. Moral: Just make an appointment. It's not difficult. (Bergen Record)
