I love Austin, but I've noted the preponderance there of homeless folks, and the general tolerance of the situation that adds to a sort of seediness in some areas, including Sixth Street. Like in San Francisco, it takes away from the ambiance, to say the least. And it leads to incidents like this, in which a panhandler, a 26-year-old woman, stabbed two passers-by for not giving her money. These people are not colorful local denizens. They are often addicts or mentally unstable or both, and they need help, not celebration. (Austin American Statesman)
