Class Warfare On Ice

You know, it's unfair for the New York Times to contrast Ilya Kovalchuk's abortive 17-year, $102 million contract announcement inside Newark's Prudential Center arena with unemployed union guys in the city beyond the arena walls. First, if the team MAKES a lot of money, why SHOULDN'T the players who the public pays to see get a large chunk of it? Second, it's those rich people whose taxes pay for the city to provide services, and whose business draws dollars to the city's businesses, which in turn hire people to work. Third, if he DOESN'T take the contract, it's not like that $102 million (over 17 years) will magically materialize in the city savings account, or create new jobs. It's a false contrast.
