Ideology Or Low Prices?
-
Corporations often give lots of money to political campaigns, and the Citizens United case kind of removed the restraints from that. But there are other ways to restrict those donations, like public pressure. And that's what's happening to Target, which donated to a group backing the campaign of a conservative Republican candidate for Governor of Minnesota, and now there's a backlash from liberals and gay-rights activists. The company, which is probably backing the guy just for his pro-business stance and not for his views on social issues, says that its pro-gay, pro-inclusiveness record speaks for itself, but that's not good enough for some people. Is this how it's going to go now? Is everyone going to examine every company's political donations and spend accordingly? Should conservatives boycott Ben and Jerry's, and liberals boycott, um, 90% of businesses? (Minneapolis Star-Tribune)
