No Starbucks? That IS A Ghost Town
-
This is a fairly useless (as a topic) but interesting article about California City, a town envisioned by its creator in 1958 as a bustling metropolis in the desert that never got built. Well, a tiny part was built, home to about 12.000 people, and they aggressively tried to sell lots there through the 1970's, but the streets for a city of several hundred thousand were not only planned but laid out and bulldozed, leaving a grid of phantom streets with nothing on them. I've seen places like that in the desert from airplanes, and I wondered why someone would go through the trouble of creating streets with no buildings, no homes, no life. It was abandoned before it started. (Los Angeles Times)
