Because There's No Place Else To Get That Kind Of Indispensable Content For Free

Another newspaper puts up a paywall, as the Worcester Telegram and Gazette, owned by the New York Times, makes its website pay (after 10 articles a month) for everyone who doesn't pay for the delivery version. $14.95 a month or $1 per day for the Worcester paper? Like with Newsday, that isn't going to work. Unlike Newsday, which left its site free to anyone who accesses it through co-owned Cablevision (in other words, 80% of its local market), there's no clear model for maintaining a critical mass of local eyeballs. (Boston Globe; Thanks to Jeff Katz at WXKS (Rush Radio 1200)/Boston for the link)
