Movie smoking is down. Craven politicians and anti-smoking folks still want some kind of rule against it, like a guaranteed R rating if any smoking is shown. First, the citation for how "44 percent of youth initiation stems from repeated viewings of smoking in movie theaters" has no basis in actual fact; it's been pulled out of someone's butt, while it's more likely most kids start smoking because of peers and because it makes them look older and cool. Second, what if it's a villain doing the smoking? Where's the context? I'm as anti-smoking as anyone -- I've never smoked, and I can't tolerate smoke at all -- but they should be reasonable and rational about this. (Washington Post)
