You Don't Want To Go To Jail For Life? Don't Break The Law
-
Three-Strikes laws are intended to get repeat criminals off the streets. But how often are they used to send a white-collar criminal to prison for life? That's the goal of prosecutors in this case of a guy who keeps bilking poor people out of their homes. He's charged with tricking five people into unknowingly signing title to their homes over to him, and if he's convicted, it's a third felony and life in prison. Critics of Three-Strikes say that this is an unintended and terrible side effect of the law, but here's a defendant who twice was convicted of felony burglary and KNEW that another infraction would send him away for life, yet allegedly went ahead with another scam. Why should he be released to do it again? (Los Angeles Times)
