September, The Neutron Bomb

Best time of year at the beach, by far: when the tourists go home. At the Jersey Shore, where I once upon a time worked, September was the best -- still warm, but the beaches were empty and you didn't have to battle for a table at every restaurant. (By the way, "shoobies" is what people at the South Jersey beaches call the seasonal visitors from Philly, with the connotation of carrying their belongings in a shoebox; at the Monmouth and Ocean County beaches where Snooki and "The Situation" were among the interlopers, the term is "bennies") (Philadelphia Inquirer)
