How bad are things in the retail business? Within just two years, Melrose Avenue, L.A.'s trendy fashion strip, has gone from the capital of conspicuous consumption to a ghost town. Empty storefronts abound as boutiques and hipster hangouts wither from lack of business. Maybe there's some justice in overpriced celebrity-magnet shops dropping like flies, but they pay taxes and generate jobs, too. (Los Angeles Times)
