Hard To Compete With Video Games And The Internet

I grew up in a suburban area where the YMCAs and YMHAs were essential to the community, especially the YMHAs, which every Jewish kid in Jersey belonged to and played basketball in and swam and practically lived in after school. My dad coached basketball at the Fair Lawn Jewish Center, and we'd go with him when his teams played at other Ys like the big one in Clifton. Times change, and that big Y in Clifton with the gym and pool is now closing. They ran out of money due to dwindling donations, and they're auctioning the place off. That's sad. Do kids no longer go to the Y? Is there no money to keep a place like that -- a community -- going? (Bergen Record)
