In the past month I've presented sessions with Morning Show talent, Producers, and Programmers in 20 cities across 6 countries. In all of them we have done an exercise where we first discuss the elements that make up a "good " morning show.
Then..........what do we need to add to take the show from good to "great"?
Starting with the good, here's a sample of what we got back from 36 breakfast presenters and producers!
Qualities of a good Morning Show
- Current
- Interactive
- Informative
- Compelling
- Interesting
- Funny
- Fun
- Approachable
- News
- Warm
- Targeted
- Good Benchmarks
- Good Music
- Family
- Real
- Listeners
- Entertaining
And what do those same presenters and producers say are the additional ingredients that take the show from good to great?
Qualities of a GREAT Morning Show
- Storytelling
- The ability to disrupt
- Talkability
- Emotion
- Creating  the News and not reporting the News
Try using these ingredients to assess your show.
The Final Word ON GREAT BREAKFAST TALENTÂ
People who put THE LISTENER and THE STATION before themselves. They understand the bigger picture of where we fit in the market and what we're trying to achieve.
Are highly coachable. Have the ability to listen and act on agreed actions.
Have an amazing work ethic. Prepared to talk ideas the night before or over the weekend (the radio is ON 7 days a week, 24 hours a day).
The best people have a "the best idea will win"Â mentality...not just "what's an idea for this piece of topicality tomorrow?"
Actually executes great ideas really well....many just talk about how hard it is and do a watered down version.
Recognizes the importance of the wider team and uses and supports them. The PD, producer, phone person, news, group resource etc.
We will win attitude - let's do the work to achieve it.
And this is personal one ... hire good human beings. Morning Radio exposes your real personality in the end.
Thanks to Dean Buchanan(Radio Programmer, UK, Aust, NZ) and Phil Angell(Group Program Director UKRD,UK) for their assistance this week.
