Covid Fatigue

At this time last year, I was with my friend Jen Sullivan reveling in the aura of her majesty Oprah Winfrey’s “2020 Your Life in Focus” tour. We sported swank VIP passes, got a glimpse of gobs and gobs of A-list celebrities, and absorbed Michele Obama’s inspiring words. We danced with Juliana Huff, lunched with Hoda, Gayle King & Dr, Shefali, and capped off the experience by meeting the Queen “O” herself! This is my version of heaven. It was a day that will rank as one of my fondest, most stupendous experiences in life! How can 2020 get any better than this??? We all know the answer to that question. 2020 slid venomously into the gutter with the crashing force of an avalanche. As we approach the year mark of the Covid-19 pandemic, many of us are hitting a wall. Mentally, and physically sick and tired of the whole thing. Covid fatigue is real.
This got me thinking about Nelson Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison without plumbing or a bed and was forced to do hard labor. Or Anne Frank who at 13 spent two years silently hiding in the tight quarters of an attic. Or the countless Jews who withstood barbaric circumstances during WWII, then lived to tell their stories. None had the convenience of Amazon prime, Uber Eats or Netflix to ease the pain. I don’t want to diminish our experience; I am just trying to put it in perspective.
I would equate both our current and their past events as “The Dark Night of The Soul.”
This is the place where you are no longer who you were or things are no longer how they were, and you are not yet who you want to become, or things are how you would like them to be.
It’s a challenging place to hang in the balance of the “in between.” Although we do see light at the end of this murky tunnel, we’re not there YET.
In the meantime, I invite you to ponder this question – If this experience were to last forever – what quality would have to emerge for me to have peace of mind?
I know for me - it’s patience, intestinal fortitude, or strength. Yeah so, I picked three, but you get the point.
Rather than resisting this space, pay attention to the quality that you pinpointed and surrender into it. Without resistance, the process of feeling happier will speed up even if the circumstances remain stagnant. I encourage you to focus on the space between…creating space and allowing…opening up your mind and your body to allow space between thoughts…space between the doing, and space between the molecules of your body. Space creates a quiet, serene peace. Space is where creativity is housed, and space allows us to be present with our true intrinsic self. In fact, the space between your head and your heart is your breath.
So, let’s begin to create space, take some serious deep breaths. Breathe into your Covid fatigue and see what shows up. I guarantee whatever it is, it’s going to help you bounce back! I hope that has served you as it has for me. After all it’s always an Inside-Project.
