7 Tips to Make Your Show Better

I feel fortunate to work with so many different shows and talent each week. I work with new shows and experienced shows, multi-player shows and individual talent. Every show has its unique strengths and its unique weaknesses, and my work is to help amplify the strengths, so many of the weaknesses no longer matter. Despite working with a variety of shows (at all levels) there are often basics I hear being missed so from time to time I like to spend a few moments reflecting on them.
Here are 7 more to add to the list…
- We’re not taking a road trip together; we’re riding an elevator together (and I’m getting off in 4 floors). You have a short amount of time to interest me and get to the point. Efficiency + impact is crucial.
- To gain my interest quickly don’t make it about yourself. Too many personalities start from their perspective or with their story. The best talent injects themselves only after starting with the listener or the subject matter first.
- Relevance > Interesting. The most important requirement for your content is to have relevance; for your content to matter to your audience. Interesting never trumps relevance. Your job is to find content that is relevant and then deliver it in interesting ways. Relevance first.
- Local isn’t about geography (and the things happening in your city/town/community), it’s about connecting on an emotional level with an audience that lives their life in the same place as you.
- Perform with the music. You need to demonstrate an awareness of the music and especially the mood of the music so you can weave your content in and around the music as one single experience. Too often music and talk content feel like they are on two separate tracks, they need to be mixed together.
- Involving the audience in your show can be powerful… but quantity never beats quality when it comes to phone calls. Continuing to air calls or read texts just because they are coming in gets boring FAST. Each call needs to contribute something new to the conversation, and each new call you air must be better than the last.
- Calls are better than texts. Why? Texts are you reading someone else’s thoughts or opinions. A call is you conversing with someone about their thoughts or opinion. One has the potential to be engaging and rich in storytelling and the other, well, doesn’t.
