BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I started my career in Atlanta with the dearly departed WBTS (95-5 The Beat), followed by WIHB (B92) in Charleston, SC. After the station flipped in 2010, I helped run various stations for Apex Broadcasting until they moved me to Fort Walton Beach, FL to launch WECQ (Q92) in 2012 and I've been here ever since. We were bought out by Community Broadcasters earlier this year and we're gearing up for a big 2017!
1) How would you describe the radio landscape in your market?
For a smaller market, it's very competitive. There are basically two stations for every format in the market and a lot of great local talent ... something you don't normally find these days. It makes trying to win an everyday challenge ... and isn't that what it's all about?
2) Are you wearing more "hats" than you have in the past?
Aren't we all? You can either shy away from it or embrace it. I like the challenge! Plus, it can be dull to be stuck doing one or two things all day. It keeps your creative juices flowing when you can bounce from project to project.
3) What are you doing social media-wise?
At Q92, we pride ourselves on being the market leader in social media. It is just another way to reach your audience and connect. Not only do we do the usual (FB, Twitter, IG and Snap), we also have a weekly podcast and a monthly TV show that's carried by a local cable provider and carried nationally through Roku devices! Cheap plug time: Go to our YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/q92hitmusicnow) to check out "The Q on 30a TV."
4) What's the coolest promotion you've been involved with recently?
Being in a resort town, we have a huge influx of people during Spring Break season. So every year, we set up "Q92's Spring Break Headquarters." We put a remote studio on the beach every day in March, complete with giant beer pong, a photo booth, games, prizes, and generally bad decisions! That's what Spring Break is all about, right?
5) Who would be a "dream guest" to have on your show?
Kanye. Like him or not, he always speaks what's on his mind. We need more Kanyes; they keep life interesting.
6) Looking back, which years hold the best musical memories for you and who were your favorite acts at that time?
Working in Atlanta at the boom of the Crunk music era will always hold a special place in my heart. You know how you can still hear Lil' Jon "Get Low" or Usher "Yeah" in the club in 2016? Imagine being in Atlanta when those songs were worldwide #1s many times, partying right next to the artists themselves.
7) Do you have a favorite hobby outside of radio?
I watch a lot of pro wrestling. Wait, are people going to read this?
8) What is it about our industry that keeps you wanting to do it for a living?
It will always come back to the idea of being able to reach people on a personal level. People driving home from a long day of work ... can I give them something to cheer them up? A song, story, or anecdote? Additionally, the idea of being people's source for vital information during emergency situations will always be pretty cool to me.
9) What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
Hard work and extra effort never go unrecognized. And the leftover pizza in the break room is probably good. Go for it. Live a little.
10) What advice would you give people new to the business?
Learn how to do everything. Ask questions. Reach out to people who have been in the business for a while. They are usually very good about giving advice.
Bonus Questions
For someone vacationing in your market, what one thing would you say they "must see?'"
This one is easy: We have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Have you ever seen them? Seriously. Go google "Destin, Florida." I'll wait.
