On-air weekdays 11a-3p. I hope to make your workday fun! Behind the scenes I run promotions for the station, brainstorming and executing station contests, events and promotions with my PD and air staff!
1) What led you to a career in radio?
I love listening to the radio. At my college station, I went through the Kellar Radio Talent Institute where we met broadcasters from all over the state. It was a game changing experience!
2) "Local, local. local" has always been radio's mantra. How do you keep your station visible and involved in the community?
Everyone on our staff lives in our listening area. We work where our listeners do; we eat dinner where they do, we cheer for the same sports teams (Go UNC) and morn their losses together. We love contests that involve scavenger hunts, having movie nights with listeners, our annual Back 2 School Bash at the local mall and our new cupcake challenge which celebrates local bakeries!
3) What's the coolest promotion you've been involved with recently?
"Find Red Head Ed" was one of my favorites we've done at Pulse. We hid posters of Ed Sheeran around the triangle and gave clues on-air for listeners to find him. If you found the poster you won tickets to his show in Raleigh. We got calls, Snapchats, videos and e-mails all day from excited people looking for him!
4) What artist would we be surprised to find on your personal playlist?
George Strait. I love Country music. Starting at Pulse FM was my first venture into Top 40 music. I love it now, but I still love Country music as well.
5) What's one thing that would surprise many people to learn about you?
Speaking in front of a crowd or in an interview terrifies me. I've learned to hide it!
6) Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff and why do you like them?
The Q-Morning Crew on QDR. Mike Wheless, Janie Carothers and Mary Young. (Marty just left us, but he's still included). Listening to them on-air, I've seen the love that they have for their listeners and how listeners love them. They don't put on an act when they are on the air, they are themselves and it shows. They make you feel like part of the family and part of the team.
7) What was your favorite station to listen to when you were a kid?
Froggy 101 in Scranton, PA. That was my station. When I was 14, I won Brad Paisley tickets and M&Gs with Kelly Green. That was a memory that will stick with me for life.
8) Who were your mentors? Who would you say has influenced your career the most?
Dan "Vallie" Hill, Station Manager -- WASU at Appalachian State University. To be on the air at our college station, we had to take a specific half-semester class with Dan and complete observation hours with students already on the air. You can tell Dan cares about his students. He was there any time for questions, airchecks and advice. He's still always there for me with any radio question I have!
9) What is it about our industry that keeps you wanting to do it for a living?
Giving away prizes. I love the excitement when someone wins concert tickets, or a vacation/flyaway. Working in promotions I'll get sent pictures or e-mails describing their experience and that's the best part of my day!
10) What advice would you give people new to the business?
Learn as much as you can! Don't come in thinking "I only want to do this one specific thing." I wanted to be on-air and found out just how much I love doing promotions by helping out with promotions on another station.
Bonus Questions
What's the best sweeper/liner you've ever heard?
On an Alt Rock station: "Nice try, blocked number, I don't answer the phone for people I know." I relate on a personal level.
