Tappa Tappa Kegga1 How would you describe your first radio gig?
Remember that one kid who thought he knew the answer to every single radio question? That kid that felt he was the BEST JOCK EVER? The kid who never said "no" to anything, and tried to learn every single aspect of the station? That kid who took 4 hours to make a sweeper that really wasn't that good?
That was me. But the great thing is I learned something out of all that. Most importantly:
- I don't have the all the answers
- I was a shitty jock back then
- Never say "no"2 What led you to a career in radio?
When I was 7, out of sheer boredom, I started my pretend radio station in my parent's spare bedroom. Two cassette players and a microphone attached to a hacked off lamp arm started my infatuation of the business. I named the station KMAN and played "radio" to the lone audience of my cat. Later, when I discovered my hometown of Minden, NV had a local radio station I decided to play "fat-kid-put-face-to-glass-for-hours" and watched the magic of radio happen.
3 Indiana is home to some very successful musical artitst, John Mellencamp, Michael Jackson, Axl Rose to name a few. What's the local music scene like?
I wish I could have a full report for you but I haven't even dived into that part of the city yet. I did find two excellent piano bar players at the "Howl at the Moon" bar off East Georgia that is AWESOME! Actually, our morning show "The Morning Mess" did a remote from there my first week and Gavin DeGraw showed up. Piano must be pretty good.
4 What was your favorite station to listen to when you were a kid?
I grew up just outside of Reno and loved listening to Simon and Garrison on KODS back in the day. "Oldies 104" was what my radio was stuck on 24/7. That started my infatuation with rock 'n roll. Beatles, Beach Boys, Stones. When I needed an oldies break, I loved KWNZ in its true Rhythmic days. Matt Million, Johnny B, Wild Bill Shakespeare; those guys do GREAT radio, especially when you were a kid like me.
5 Looking back, which years hold the best musical memories for you and who were your favorite acts at that time?
For some reason I'm drawn to the summer of 2002. Not that long ago, but think of the music that was happening ... it was awesome!
Fat Joe/Ashanti - "What's Luv?"
Ashanti - "Foolish"
DJ Sammy - "Heaven"
Creed - "One Last Breath"
Vanessa Carlton - "A Thousand Miles"
Pink - "Don't Let Me Get Me"
Nelly - "Hot In Herre"6 What music do you listen to when you're not working?
I know everyone says it, but I listen to everything. My girlfriend in Tulsa turned me on to the Rascal Flatts CD, "Me and My Gang," which is GREAT! Something Corporate, Dave Matthews Band, The Beatles. I just bought the best of Darryl Hall and John Oates the other day. Bruce Hornsby, Jimmy Buffett, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg. Don't make me pick just one.
7 What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
Make it a point to learn something new everyday. Once you stop learning, you might as well pack up your desk. Don't F10 YOUR CAREER!
8 What advice you would give people new to the business?
HEY KID! Listen! You don't have all the answers. Shut the fuck up and listen. You got questions? Ask. Do what your PD tell you to do until they tell you to stop. Odds are that your PD knows a thing or two about radio. Listen! Talent is a blessing, egos are expendable.
9 What advice you would give current Program Directors in the business?
Please coach your talent. It takes only a few minutes out of your day to give a kid a pat on the back and say, "great break last night," or "thanks for doing that promo." Being part of the younger generation of the work force, we need CONSTANT reassurance that we are going a good job. We despise failure. It's not an ego boost, but because our parents let the computer and television act as babysitter, many children simply didn't get a lot of nurturing. Please, just guide them. Help them get better.
Same goes if someone outside your station sends you an aircheck to critique. If you have 5 minutes to listen and write a review, please do so. I wish I had more programmers like that growing up.
If you're not doing this to help talent, don't complain about the quality of talent responding to your job opening post. There would be lots more talented, competent, compelling jocks out there, if the teaching started with you.
10 Please include your traditional radio name dropping list here:
Cat Thomas - KLUC
JB King - KLUC
Carmy Ferreri - Results Radio
Bill Schulz - Americom
Jave Patterson - Lotus
Bill Shakespeare - Reno
Tod Tucker - KHTTWithout them, I'd be talent-less.
Bonus Questions
What's one thing that would surprise many people to learn about you?
I am probably the "gayest" straight guy you'll ever meet. I always try to dress nice, I have to keep everything clean and I can cook. Not like 'macaroni and cheese and hot dogs' cook, but rather herb-fried chicken, steamed asparagus and hand mashed red potatoes... with a bottle of wine of course!
