Please outline your radio career so far:
WUPE, Overnights
WAYI, Nights
WVKZ (WCPP), Afternoons
WRHT, MD/Afternoons, (eventually PD)
WKSI, PD
WLAN, APD/Afternoons (and now PD)
Did a two-month stint at WYKS as APD/Afternoons1 How would you describe your first radio gig?
A shot to do radio! I lived there. Wait ... I live here now. Not much has changed in 18 years.
2 How would you describe the radio landscape in your market?
Competitive ... just like every other market. Lancaster only gets two books a year, so as you can imagine, the numbers can go up and down all the time. Our Fall '05 book was huge, but in Spring '06, we're down. However, our 18-34 female numbers went from a 17.3 to a 20 share, so I'm happy.
3 What is your favorite part of the job?
I still love being on the air everyday. As long as I can focus on it without dealing with all the other PD stuff it's great.
4 Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff and why do you like them?
Cubby!! Truly one of the coolest people I've ever met. I have an autographed Cubby picture in my office. Yes, I'm a radio geek!
5 What was your favorite station to listen to when you were a kid?
PYX 106 in Albany ... and they still sound awesome.
6 Looking back, which years hold the best musical memories for you and who were your favorite acts at that time?
I'm a Hair Band Rocker from the 80's. I loved all of it. Cinderella, Motley Crue, Poison, Twisted Sister, etc. I know, I know ... geek.
7 Do you have a favorite hobby outside of radio?
What is this "outside of radio" thing you speak of?
8 What music do you listen to when you're not working?
Depends on my mood. Everything from Neil Diamond to KISS, and Big Bad Vodoo Daddy. Mostly, I listen to my station.
9 What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
Don't talk trash, because it can and will bite you back. You hear that McCoy? Just wait till the World Series! Go Red Sox!
10 What advice you would give people new to the business?
I wish I had some words of wisdom, but I don't. I got here by working my butt off and doing everything that was asked of me and I still do it today. I will do whatever it takes to get the job done, and then some. Hey, maybe those are the 'words of wisdom.'
Bonus Questions
For someone vacationing in your market, what one thing would you say they "must see"?
Everyone who comes here has to visit Amish country! Seeing it on TV doesn't do it justice. Beautiful countryside. It's a trip to see a family all piled up in a horse-drawn buggy rollin' along Route 30.
