10 Questions with ... Trey Morgan

BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:

I started as an intern at Clear Channel Radio/Brevard, FL. I was hired part-time to board op for the Talk station in the cluster, and then when the Classic Rock station flipped to Rhythmic Top 40, I got my first shot on the air. I still don't know what my PD, Zac Davis, was thinking after that first shift, but he kept me on the air. A few years later, I made the trip to KC101 in New Haven, CT to do nights. After a couple of months, I added part-time/swing duties at KISS 108 in Boston. After two years of trekking to Boston, I made the switch to Z100 in New York City. While pulling double-duties as APD/afternoons at KC101 and part-time at Z100, I began hosting a short-lived TV show in Boston called S.R.O. (Standing Room Only). In November 2009, I was lucky enough to be offered a full-time position at Z100 doing late nights (10p-2a).

1) When we last spoke, you were broadcasting from the middle of "Radio Towers Park." Now, you're broadcasting from the middle of Manhattan. How's it feel?

Like a dream come true! I will be doing the same thing on the air in New York City as I did in New Haven; I just get to do it at the world-famous Z100. Man, that's so cool to say.

2) Will this necessitate a change of residence to New York for you, or northern NJ?

Yeah, I will be heading down I-95 south to my new place in New Jersey. The best thing is that I have a view of Manhattan.

3) How did the opportunity come about to join Z100?

It started a few years ago when I e-mailed Sharon Dastur because I wanted to learn more about the Z100 programming philosophy. Sharon was nice enough to show me a few of the Z100 tricks and then asked if I would like to audition. After a year of auditions, Sharon brought me on part-time, and now I get to work there every day.

4) Will you still be heard on KC101 or any other stations?

Yeah, I was chosen to join the Clear Channel Premium Choice air staff doing weekends and fill-in. I am also looking to add a few stations interested in custom shows.

5) Are you wearing more "hats" than you have in the past?

Actually, I will be wearing fewer hats. At KC101, I was afternoons, APD and MD. Now that I have made the jump to NYC, I will be focusing on being on the air, but I still plan to be involved with music and programming in some form.

6) What artist would we be surprised to find on your iPod?

A lot of people make fun of me for this, but I am a huge fan of Norah Jones. I have just about her entire catalogue on both my iPod and Blackberry ... just in case.

7) Could you give us a little insight into your on air staff?

I think everyone has a pretty good idea of the Z100 air staff. This is a dream-team lineup. The world's best morning show with Elvis Duran from 6-10a. After that is Ryan Seacrest until 2p. JJ Kincaid does afternoons, who in my opinion is one of the best jocks in the country. Mo Bounce sounds great at night, then there's me in late-nights and the always smiling Shelly Wade in overnights.

8) Who would be a "dream guest" to have on your show?

My dad would be my dream guest. I know it's not a cool or funny answer, but that is the truth. Growing up, he would drag me to WBAP remotes to meet the personalities. He loved radio. Sadly, he died before getting the chance to hear me on the air. That ... and I think we would put on a pretty good show. He would definitely steal the show. He was hilarious!

9) Do you have a favorite hobby outside of radio?

I love photography. The world around us deserves to be admired.

10) What advice you would give people new to the business?

My advice would be to be persistent and never stop learning. Whether you want to learn how to take the next step as a jock or if you want to learn how to schedule music, just keep learning.

For someone vacationing in your market, what one thing would you say they "must see"?

Everything! It's New York City. If I had to narrow it down I would say that you need to head to the observation deck at 30 Rock. A lot of people go to the top of the Empire State Building to see the view. The problem is you don't get to see the gem of the skyline. At 30 Rock you get to see everything plus take the NBC tour and hit the NBC shop. This message was not paid for by NBC or 30 Rock ... I promise.
