BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I started in radio at the age of 14 as an intern for the original Wild 106 in Albuquerque. From there, I went on to work for 97.3 Kiss-FM for about two-and-a-half years as a part-time swing jock, transitioned from there to Clear Channel and did nights for KSYU for about six-and-a-half years and then left there to come to AGM about eight months ago. I've been lucky enough to get into just about every aspect of radio ... whether it's imaging, on-air, mix shows or whatever, I have done it all that's for sure. I am currently the afternoon jock and Imaging Director for 97-7 OMG radio and recently signed with Benztown to be one of their Imaging Directors for stations all over the country!
1) What led you to a career in radio?
I was always fascinated with it ... I did a report in 6th grade about being a DJ ... actually interviewed Johnny V for the report, who is still the afternoon jock at Kiss today! I knew what I was going to do when one day I was in the car with my dad and a jock came on, so naturally I turned the radio up ... Dad didn't like that much and told me that when I grow up I'm not going to have a job where I can sit around and listen to music all day ... LOL! Love ya, Dad!
2) What makes your station unique? How would you compare it to other stations you've worked at?
We were able to build this station from the ground up ... if we wanted to do it, we did it. That type of mentality hadn't been seen in awhile, so it was nice to write sweepers like "OMG ... that's what she said," and get away with it!
3) Are you wearing more "hats" than you have in the past?
Who isn't? Mix shows, imaging, on-air, commercial production ... if you're not wearing more than one hat, you're already halfway out the door in today's game!
4) What is the most challenging part of the job?
Being creative in a matter of seconds. Marketing the station through imaging doesn't get the praise that it should ... making people remember your name based on the imaging you come up with is not easy!
5) What artist would we be surprised to find on your iPod?
Jon Secada ... ha, how can you not love Jon Secada? Can't believe I just said that.
6) What's one thing that would surprise many people to learn about you?
I have an absolute obsession with R&B baby-makin' music. At any given time you'll catch me slow jamming. It's a little ridiculous!
7) Do you have a favorite hobby outside of radio?
If there's ever a chance to sneak out early and hit the golf course or the slopes on the snowboard, ya better believe I'm there ... after all the work is done, of course....
8) What music do you listen to when you're not working?
Like I said earlier, I have an unhealthy obsession with R&B ... lately I'm all about the new Usher album, Robin Thicke, Ryan Leslie, J. Holiday, John Legend, Ne-Yo, Justin Timberlake ... I know, it's ridiculous.
9) What is it about our industry that keeps you wanting to do it for a living?
Being a professional in radio means that you can, for the most part, come to work in flip-flops and a hat and still be a "professional." I'm a big fan of that. Seriously, though, radio is unlike any other job. Every day is different ... it's always new and exciting. Why wouldn't you want to do it for a living!?
10) What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
People forgive but don't forget.
Bonus Questions
What ringtone do you have on your cel?
A freestyle that Travie McCoy was kind enough to do for me over one of my beats ... classic!
