1) How would you describe your first radio gig?
Reading weather once an hour during Dick Clark's show on an Oldies station in Duluth, MN.
2) How would you describe the radio landscape in your market?
Heritage rules. I am fortunate enough to work for a station that has been a Top 40 since 1977 ... so it's very "generational." We dominate even the upper-demos with females because so many people grew up with this station. Now their kids and even grandkids all listen.
3) What makes your station unique? How would you compare it to other stations you've worked at?
It's a very "adult"-driven Top 40. We also tend to lean to the "Rock" side of things, so there is a "sound' to our station that is unique. Some of the pop/dance records just don't sound like "us," and we're not afraid to play a song from a band that DOES fit our "sound" ... even if nobody else in the country is playing it.
4) What's the coolest promotion you've been involved with recently?
We have a beautiful facility that we're able to have Packer players in weekly for shows, live acoustic shows ... it's those type of promotions that "money can't buy tickets for" that I like best.
5) What artist would we be surprised to find on your iPod?
Hmmm ... I really like old Metallica; Hall & Oates had some great jams, and there are a handful of Classic Country songs from the '80s that I really like, too.
6) What's one thing that would surprise many people to learn about you?
I've never had an alcoholic beverage in my life ... and I don't plan on doing so.
7) Could you give us a little insight into your on-air staff?
Murphy in the Morning has been here for 19 years. Again, very rare in this day and age. John Maino, morning show co-host, is the funny-guy of the group. He's a long-time local sports guy and is the "rock star" of the show ... EVERYBODY in town knows him. Katie represents our female demo well and isn't afraid AT ALL to mix it up with the boys in the morning. Otis Day is our midday guy. He did nights for 13 years and is probably one of the funniest/most creative Top 40 jocks in the country. Average Joe runs a very tight, interactive and entertaining show in the PM Drive. He's been here for eight years as well, so all of our personalities are well-known and represent the brand that is WIXX.
8) Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff and why do you like them?
I'm a big fan of Sports radio and I'm from Minnesota so I would say it's a three-way tie: Dave Ryan on KDWB ... he's one of the most creative and talented morning show guys in the nation. And Paul Allen and Dan "Common Man" Cole on KFAN/Minneapolis, who are great personalities for completely different reasons, but I could listen to those guys 24/7 and never want to change the station.
9) Who would be a "dream guest" to have on your show?
Will Smith ... everybody loves him! Brett Favre comes to mind, but I would certainly have to screen the calls if he was on in Green Bay!
10) What advice you would give people new to the business?
Sacrifice, soak up as much info as possible, ask questions and be reliable.
Bonus Questions
For someone vacationing in your market, what one thing would you say they "must see"?
Easy ... Lambeau.
