Lil Tjay was born Tione Jayden Merritt on April 30, 2001 in New York. He started releasing music on SoundCloud in 2017.
He attracted the attention of record companies when he took first place at an all ages artist showcase in NYC when he was just 16.
His first release was the song "Brothers," which led to Columbia Records signing the artist. Other songs were released after the signing, amassing tens of millions of streams. His first EP, No Comparison, was released in 2018. Another EP, F.N, was released the following year. His debut album, True 2 Myself, was released that October. Another EP, State Of Emergency, was released in May 2020.
He has collaborated with rappers Polo G, 24kGoldn and with the late Pop Smoke, who featured Tjay on the track, "Mood Swings".
This year, he collaborated with singer 6LACK on the song "Calling My Phone," which is Tjay's highest charting single to date.
