BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
KDVS/Davis, CA (1992), KSFM/Sacramaneto, CA (1992-1998), KLUC/Las Vegas (1998-present)
1. What got you interested in Radio?
I always loved listening to the radio growing up; I'd record countdown shows, loved morning shows, making mix-tapes of new music off the radio. Back in the day in the Bay, KMEL was it. That was THE station. Everyone listened. My high school, Skyline High School in Oakland, actually won their first scavenger hunt and got a free concert from The Boys plus Cameron Paul in the mix. But, I never thought about radio as a career, until I was in college at U.C. Davis. I got an internship at KSFM and after about 3 months, that was it, fell in love.
2. You just had Nicole Scherzinger in the studio with you last week. Who's the hottest celeb to stroll through the doors at KLUC?
Wow...well, Nicole is definitely up there, and not to sound too pervy, but, damn she smelled great. Keri Hilson is very beautiful. Mandy Moore had a kind of granola cuteness. We've had a bunch of Playmates through the building that I'm sure were hot, but I can't remember them all.
3. What makes KLUC special?
I think that KLUC has lasted and demolished competitors over the years because WE ARE Las Vegas. As the city has grown, we've grown with it. From playing hits, to community involvement, to live and local personalities, we just sound like Vegas. I like to define KLUC as a 'mass appeal, hit intensive, pop culture, listener driven station'.
4. Aren't you getting married pretty soon? Have you seen Hangover II and is Chuck Field going to have ANYTHING to do with the bachelor party planning?
Yes, I have seen Hangover 2...very good. And, the bachelor party...ideas are being tossed around...and yes, the Chucker's input will be needed.
5. Does it concern you that midget strippers are likely to perform at your fiancé's bachelorette party?
Nah, I'm ok with that. Actually, there are a few guy listeners, little people in LV that have crushes on Lauren.
6. What two words best describe your boss, Cat Thomas?
'Repetitive Cat-isms"...anyone who's worked for Cat knows what I'm talking about or "Football Analogies" or "Ohio State", maybe "Free Tattoos". Sorry, too easy. Actually, I'd probably say, 'Big Picture'. He understands so much about programming and the operations to make a successful station from both programming and sales sides. He has a vision that is so much more than just picking the hits and giving away concert tickets. He knows how to break down research and strategize, use the entire station, both programming and sales to maximize for the cluster and the company. He's almost nerdy on how much he enjoys breaking it all down.
7. Who are some of the programmers you network with when talking music?
I love talking music with anyone really. We are very fortunate that within CBS we have some of the best PDs and MDs in the biz and the weekly conference calls is a great resource. I also like asking label reps, most of who really love music as well, 'other than your own records what are your favorites'. Try it; you might get some interesting responses.
8. Radio should...
Take it back to basics. Continue to grow our staffs. Take full advantages of fun, immediacy and street level entertainment that makes radio great and fun for the listeners.
9. Most people come to Las Vegas to play. What if you want to relax? Give me an insider, local tip.
Honestly, just chill. Vegas is so much more than The Strip, clubs and pool parties. But like many others, with my weekly schedule, when I do have down time I like to relax, refocus and recharge. Also, a few beers never hurt with the relaxing process.
10. If you were to leave Radio today and you could choose any other occupation, what would it be?
Honestly, it's been awhile since I thought about..'What, if not radio'. And I don't know. I think writing could be fun. Maybe explore Hollywood and some voice over work. Wait a minute...Pete do you know something that I don't?????
Bonus Questions
What's your favorite song that you're NOT playing, right now?
"If I Die Young' - The Band Perry, I just dig that track
