BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Started as an intern in Saginaw at WTCF under Tom Lazar when they ran a Top 40 format and I was a poor college student at Saginaw Valley State Univ. I worked overnights at WWCK/Flint before Scott Sieple agreed to let me on the morning show. It ended up turning into a two year run and another two years as nights host at WWCK. I jumped across the street to WRCL shortly after it started up under the direction of Nathan Reed. For the last nine years I've called it my home as nights, mornings, MD/APD and now as Brand Manager.
1. What got you into radio?
I called into a "desperate & dateless" contest from our dorm room posing as one of our roommates that was gone. I did everything I could to make him sound like an ass, and apparently was funny enough to have the DJ call me back and ask to intern. A phony resume later, I was staying up all night long running "All Night Café" for free and it's been a love affair since then.
2. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A high school speech teacher, and not the shortest guy on my team . . . neither has come true.
3. What about Flint would probably surprise someone that's only familiar with Flint from news stories about the economic struggles of the area?
Flint is a very proud city, and even with its bad rep, the people here are passionate about Flint. It's not easy for an outsider to come in and be accepted, but once in, you are part of Flint. There are so many talented people here, and the main thing all of them want to do is put some positive news about their home out into the world.
4. Don't you do some PA announcing for football games in the area?
I do! The two time champion (and undefeated last year) Saginaw Sting arena football team. Sports is, and always has been my passion, so the opportunities I've had to do this, and a weekly high school sports feature with FOX66 (our local FOX affiliate) have been awesome.
5. Tell me a little about your air staff at Club?
Over the last year we have had an entire changeover in staff. I went from having the best staff in the state (IMHO) with K Dubb (Kelvin Washington) and Ian (Slacker) for five years to losing both of them in less than 10 months. Both have moved up to bigger markets and made room for two more jocks to grow. LV is taking over K Dubb's spot as Promotions Director and afternoon drive and Ricky Burns is our new Music Director and nights host. Both are very talented and will do a great job with the station.
6. What's your favorite song on the station right now?
It changes daily, but Meek Mill - "Amen" and Mac Miller - "Missed Calls" are two that I definitely love right now.
7. If your GM was a high school teacher, what would he/she teach?
Our GM is the man, and would probably be best suited to teach Gym. I want to say that he wouldn't make it very long as a high school teacher, but I don't want to send off the wrong impression.
8. What do you like to do in your spare time?
I play a lot of sports, and run my town's youth baseball program. Along with the Saginaw Sting, FOX66, my wife and our two kids I'm not really sure what spare time looks like anymore.
9. If you could be on any TV reality show or game show, which would you want to be on?
I would go back in time and be on Press Your Luck! Those Whammies . . . does it get any better?
10. Hypothetical question...If you were getting married in two months and you could have any group or singer perform at your reception, who would you choose?
In format? My wife would kill me if I had the chance to have Drake perform and didn't. Out of format? I would, without question have BNL at the wedding (with Steve Page).
Bonus Questions
When out for dinner in Flint, what's the meal of choice?
Wait, people with kids get to go out to dinner? There is a Mexican spot called Tia Halitas that I have thought about breaking into after hours to steal their chips, does that count?
If there was a reality TV show about Club 93.7. Who would be the audience's favorite character?
I don't know who the favorite would be right now, just because everyone is so new but they would love the confessional rants by all of the staff.
