BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I started off dancing at a club in Davis, CA called the Davis Grad. KSFM showed up for a remote and I met the afternoon guy Trejo who offered us movie tickets to entertain at a movie premiere later that week and that's where it all began in 1996. I started interning in the promotions department for free stuff and to drive the station van. After college, KSFM gave me a job in promotions and doing the street countdown on the night show. After the night jock left in 1998, they offered me the job and I took it then decided I needed a break from my family and headed to Bakersfield later that year to do nights for KKXX. That didn't last long. I got fired over the phone a year later. After a few weeks, I was offered a shot at the morning show for KISS 94.1, where I have been longer than the name. We're now Hot 94.1. I've been doing my show for 14 years. If I can just do it another 6 years I may get the gold watch.
1. What got you into radio?
My dad got me into radio by always telling me to get a job after college because they are hard to find. So after graduation KSFM offered me a job, so it just seemed easier than sending resumes and going on interviews. I already had a key to the prize closet so how do you pass that up?
2. What's the advantage of doing a solo morning show?
The best part is I can take all the credit when I put out a good show. Just knowing that I did it and I can compete with these other shows that have more than one mind creating. Although I really don't do it solo, I have the best listeners in the world who all have opinions or are half cocked and ready to express themselves. I really do a show with thousands of co-hosts who lack reason and have no accountability. I have listeners that call with characters and participate in ways a co-host should.
3. What are some of the disadvantages that you've noticed over the years?
If I get to take all the credit then I get to take all the blame, also. The biggest problem is that I don't have someone to tell me something isn't good or funny and maybe we shouldn't do that bit. There is nothing worse than a bit or joke not working and you're the only one laughing.
4. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
All I knew growing up was I wanted to be rich. I had no idea what I wanted, so I was headed toward teaching. I wish someone would have told me the jobs that get you rich.
5. If you could pick a celebrity co-host for the rest of 2013, who would you pick?
Kim Kardashian. If she can turn a sex tape into millions who knows what she could with my show.
6. What's special about Bakersfield?
It's just a great town. Being so close to Los Angles we get so much flack for being a one horse town but when you live here you see we have a lot to offer. Crazy cops, Luigi's, The Crystal Palace, some actor from a James Bond film that lived here, David Carr, Joey Porter, and the running back for the Chargers. Ok, maybe you have to live here to understand.
7. When was the last time your PD, J. Reed, was really pissed about something that happened on-air?
I don't think J gets up early enough to listen to the show. (OK...now he's pissed)
8. If I called your 4th grade teacher, would he/she be surprised that you're hosting a morning radio show?
Not at all. Every report card I received from 1st grade through 8th said "won't stop talking to others" in the comment section.
9. What do you like to do in your spare time?
Long rides on the golf course, cuddling up with a big bowl of popcorn on the couch watching reruns of the Big Bang Theory and of course bar hopping, Bako has some great neighborhood bars
10. Do you remember listening to morning shows when you were in high school? Any lasting impressions?
There is only one thing to remember going to high school in the South Bay, a story that the President Clinton tied up traffic on an LAX runway for over an hour while getting a haircut on his plane and Mancow staged a parody of the incident on the Bay Bridge during rush hour. He used vans to block lanes on the bridge while his sidekick, Chuy Gomez, got a haircut. Mancow was prosecuted and eventually convicted of a felony by a San Francisco Municipal Court. He got three years probation, a $500 fine and 100 hours of community service. That was our OJ chase.
Bonus Questions
If you could be on any TV reality show or game show, which would you want to be on?
I can't sing or dance so the talent competitions are out. I don't have a sex tape so reality television is out. I would have to say Wipeout. It's the only show I'm built for.
It really pisses me off ______________.
It really pisses me off when I see these hot chicks with fake boobs getting mad because you're checking them out.
