1.What got you into radio?
It seems I have answered this question a thousand times. The answer is simple. I knew from the age of 12 that this is what I wanted to do. I am blessed that this is the ONLY work I have ever done in my life. I love music, and I came from a very musical family of musicians, singers, and dancers...I had a lot of peer pressure to be musical as a child. I wasn't very good playing instruments, I STILL can't sing, and I sure as hell was never a dancer. After all, who in radio knows how to dance?
2. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
That's crazy...a city planner, and in radio...never was a doubt
3. When do you and Necol celebrate your wedding anniversary? Do you think your relationship has affected you as a manager and air personality?
We celebrate on June 4th! My relationship with my wife has definitely made me a better person. She is an amazing compassionate woman who has taught me how to slow down and enjoy the simple things in life. I truly feel that she has added years to my life. I am a better man because of her.
4. Wichita State had an incredible season going 35-1 this year. How involved with the school and program does Power get?
We are EXTREMELY involved. We have more presence on campus than any station in the market. I am a Wichita State alum and have remained very close to the program for years. I have an awesome relationship with our head coach, assistants, players, and just about everyone in the athletic department. I am pretty regular at team practices, road games, and just spending time with the players. We always have a game sponsorship with just about all the team sports...volleyball, women's basketball, men's basketball, and baseball...all of which have been or are nationally ranked!
5. Wichita State's tournament run ended sooner than expected. Should we expect the Shockers to be strong in 2014-15?
I am telling everyone who can read, see, and hear...Wichita State will be VERY GOOD again next year. We have 3 starters returning from the record setting team. We lose 4 seniors, only one of them a starter, and we have one of our best recruiting classes ever coming. I look for all of them to play right away and we have 7 foot JC center who is going to be a beast inside. We will start the season nationally ranked, we will win the Valley, and we will be in the NCAA tournament again next year...make no mistake...I will be there for every single tipoff!
6. Got a favorite song on the station right now?
Trey Songz "Na Na", Childish Gambino "3005", Tinashe "2 On", and We Are Toonz "Drop That Nae Nae"
7. What excites you about radio as a business right now?
Radio is strong. We offer so much in this ever increasing digital age in music, sound, and social media. No other mass communication tool is better positioned than radio in delivering and maximizing opportunity in social media than radio. I work for the best broadcast company in America, Entercom, and the future opportunities continue to be bright and very exciting
8. What do you like to do in your spare time?
Seriously...get on my I-pad and play Megapolis! LOL! I LOVE to read, and I love sports, my Xbox, I love to cook and fire up the grill, but nothing beats spending time with my wife and kids...that, more than anything, is the best.
9. Which record promotion executive would probably throw the wildest bachelor party?
Wow, that's a tough one...probably Rick Sackheim (although he is not a bachelor)
10. You're a veteran programmer and air personality. Got any sage advice for the youngsters starting out in Radio?
Be passionate, be prepared, stay focused, do whatever it takes to win
Bonus Questions
If you had to eat one type of meal everyday for a month, what would it be?
EVERYDAY??? Hmm, Steak (protein) and vegetables
Your "go to" romantic spot in Wichita?
The Keeper Of The Plains is a true AMERICAN treasure. It is a 30 foot statue that sits on the point where the Big Arkansas and Little Arkansas rivers meet. A pretty special place that sits on Indian land smack dab in the heart of the city. A special place for a number of reasons, even more so on a summer star lit night and you are with your special lady...makes it even better
