BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I started doing college radio in 1997 at KFSR/Fresno State. I did nights for a local Art Laboe-owned station from 1999-2001. I was hired at KBOS in Aug. 2001, started as "slow jams" host, moved to afternoons and became Music Director. I left KBOS in October 2009.
In April 2012 I came aboard at KSEQ fulltime and in November 2012, I was named APD.
1. What got you into radio?
At the risk of revealing the age behind my young-looking and handsome face, I used to make my own mixtapes, recording my favorite songs off the radio. I'd notice that most radio DJs sounded horrible and I would make comments to myself like, "that guy is terrible" and "he's not funny at all" or "what is he even talking about?"
I felt like I owed it to myself and others to be a great radio personality.
2. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
As a kid, I always thought I would end of being a police officer. Instead, I'm doing an almost identical job: I'm in a position of power and influence, I talk to strangers everyday, drive a cool car, and videos of me are regularly posted on social media. I even own handcuffs (personal use). I'm like a real-life hero.
3. If you could pick one sport to compete in during the 2016 Olympics, which would you choose?
Since I wouldn't want to get poisoned by anything floating in the oceans or rivers of Rio, all water sports are out. I actually have decades of wrestling training under my belt, so that would be the one. My chair-swinging skills are unmatched, my top rope elbow is a thing of beauty, and my catchphrases are on-point. That medal is coming home with me. And that's the bottom line.
4. What makes Fresno special to you?
There's something magical and beautiful that happens in Fresno that makes living in a huge city feel like you're living in the suburbs. Fresh fruit is everywhere. Freeway traffic is a non-issue. We've got tons of stand-alone local restaurants and stores, but the excitement of a new trendy chain spot coming to town is still super cool. Also, if you drive a few hours from Fresno, you'll hit Yosemite or the ocean or the Bay Area or LA, depending on which direction you go. Plus, we've got many sexy people just walking around everywhere.
5. Comic-Con or the Super Bowl?
No contest, Comic-Con. I've hit a few knock-off conventions here and there, but the SD Comic-Con is totally a bucket list trip. Superheroes, video games, toys, and cos-players will always trump a football game.
6. What song ALWAYS gets you dancing around the studio?
Currently? "Sucker for Pain" is my jam. When I play it, I play it loud.
All time? I'll use any excuse to play some West Coast and when we do, I'll get on my feet every time. (But I don't dance, I boogie)
7. If you weren't in radio, what do you think you'd be doing professionally?
Couple options. I'd be hosting a variety or game show on a start-up cable channel, where I would wear fancy suits and cool ties. Or I'd be doing ring announcing, interviews, or commentary for WWE where I'd be affectionately referred to as "that fan-boy we have on the payroll."
8. Where is your dream vacation destination?
Can't say I've ever been any place more perfect than Hawaii. The weather, the beaches, the pineapple. That's where I'd most like to unplug from the world, take my pants off (important), and relax.
9. What would you like to do better as an air personality?
Everyday, I want to be more entertaining, more funny and more relevant than I was yesterday. I've met thousands of people in my area code during my career, but I want to meet more. I want to talk with them, shake their hands, eat with them, take shots with them, make cartoon voices to their babies.
Also, I'd like to be more bankable: "My name is Danny Salas and I will endorse your product or business...for money."
10. If you could choose a super power, what would you choose?
Is time travel a super power? Even the ability to go back in time a few minutes would be amazing. Imagine being able to prevent a tragic car accident. Stopping a horrific fight before it begins. Having the power to avoid running into your psycho ex at the mall. Sweet.
Also, I'd like to drive a DeLorean.
Bonus Questions
If you had to eat one type of meal everyday for a month, what would it be?
Pretty sure I HAVE eaten one type of meal everyday for a month. I'm in the unofficial Mexican food capital of California. Doesn't matter how many different ways you can prepare tortillas, meat, and cheese, I will eat it and I will love it. Beans and rice? I'm all in. Shrimp cocktail? Give me two. Taco truck? C'mon now. What are you, new here?
How do we make our cities safer?
Everybody gets a gun...No wait, nobody gets a gun!
Always trust the police...No wait, never trust the police!
Engage in open discussions and consider multiple points of view...No wait, that can't be right.
Um....can you come back to me on this one?
