BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I started at KBMB (103.5 The Bomb) in January 2006 as an aspiring intern with dreams of being on-air. I was quickly thrust into major roles that included: cleaning out the promotions storage facility, getting my PD's daughter breakfast from McDonald's, and putting fliers on cars in the ARCO Arena parking lot during concerts, in the middle of a hail storm.
From there, I've grown and worked my way into various positions ranging from a weekend talent, Imaging Director, Afternoon Drive host, and now a featured role on the morning show, accompanied by MD stripes! A lot of responsibility for a former Sausage McMuffin delivery boy!
1. What got you into radio?
I always enjoyed entertaining people. All throughout high school I was definitely the "class clown" which resulted in several trips to detention and angry lectures from my Dad telling me to "just shut up and pay attention in class." Now, combine that with the fact I loved listening to the radio because I felt the personalities were just grown "class clowns," I figured it was the perfect career for me.
2. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
8 year-old me thought I was a lock to be in the NBA. As I got older, I didn't grow much (I'm a towering 5'8 and a half), I realized I had unusually small hands, and my disease (Caucasianitus) hampered my jumping ability, thus dashing my NBA dreams. I'm still devastated about it to this day.
3. What has changed the most about working in radio since when you started in the business?
Artist accessability. When I got into the business 11 years ago, top artist were very accessible to radio, whether it was for concerts, promo opportunities, etc. Today, it is much harder to get top level artist to commit to working with radio.
4. Who is your favorite person to follow on Instagram?
Ashley Graham. What a dope woman! That personality, that smile, those curves... (I just had an epiphany in the middle of writing this that my girlfriend will be reading this, so I should probably quit typing before she kills me. Like, literally kills me.)
5. What would probably surprise most people about Sacramento as a place to live and work?
Sacramento, while not cheap, is one of the more affordable cities in California to live! We have a unique culture in Sacramento, as it is considered one of the most diverse cities in the nation. Not to mention, if you're a foodie, it is considered an up and coming destination for those that love to dine out with some amazing restaurants!
6. Who was probably your favorite artist interview and why?
I did an interview with Krewella a few years back that always stands out to me because it started out with me lei'ing them Hawaiian style with tampon necklaces (I promise there is a reason I had hand-crafted tampon necklaces sitting around the office). The interview was just an absolute blast from there, Jahan and Yasmine are two of the coolest chicks you will ever meet!
7. If you weren't in radio, what do you think you'd be doing professionally?
Probably working at a mall kiosk, conjuring up ideas to become a YouTube star.
8. What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love going to Sacramento Kings games, we just opened a brand new arena in downtown Sacramento that is amazing! However, most of my spare time these days is spent chasing after my 1-year old son, explaining to him that he needs to wear pants, and getting slobbered on. It's truly an awesome experience being a Dad!
9. It's amazing how many "reality" shows are on TV now. Which do you think is the best? Which do you think has to be the worst?
I think "The Voice" is the best. Great format, plus it truly does showcase some talented musicians.
The worst? Anything that includes the words: bachelor, bachelorette, real housewives... I have yet to find anything redeeming about those shows, other than they make me feel better about my own life when I'm feeling down.
10. What TV game show or reality show would you want to be on?
I'm determined to make it on the Price is Right and play Plinko!
Bonus Questions
If you had to eat one type of meal every day for a month, what would it be?
I could eat Chinese Fried Rice every day for the rest of my life, not just a month.
Did you make any New Year's resolutions? How are you doing with it?
I'm not a believer in New Year's resolutions. You can have a "resolution" anytime of the year. If you're waiting for the New Year, is it truly something you're committed to? I just feel if you're going to commit to something, you're probably not going to wait for the calendar to hit January 1 to get at it!
