BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I started as an intern for KSFM when I was 18 (2008) and learned everything from promotions, production, voicing commercials, mixing , on-air stuff, etc. Started in promotions, and eventually worked my way up. I used to fill in for the midday host when she would take the day off and one day she quit and that's how I gained a full time slot on air. I was the midday host for six years. I also took the position of the assistant music director for KSFM during that time. I took over the full time music director job for KSFM for 3 months when our MD left at the end of 2014. In May 2015, I gained the full time MD position for KNCI along with still doing my on air duties. Then in August of 2016 I was promoted to the morning show while still holding the title of MD for KNCI.
1. What got you into radio?
Mixing did. I thought I was going to be the dopest female DJ on earth! I used to listen to the 7:30 commercial free traffic jam every single morning on 102.5 KSFM on my way to school and I loved hearing DJ Charlie Ramos mix old school beats with the new songs at the time. I grew up in a household where funk music, classic rock and Motown oldies were prominent, I just thought that DJ Charlie Ramos was a GOD on the turntables and I wanted to be a female version of that. I started mixing when I was 11. So my senior year of high school I had to do a "senior project" in order to graduate and we needed a mentor. The idea of the project was to "do something that you have never done before", so I picked mixing vinyl. I only DJ'd with CD J's at the time but I wanted to learn the art of vinyl. So I called the radio station and asked Charlie if he could be my mentor and the rest was history!
2. What's the best thing about doing the morning show at KSFM?
Working with my on-air mentor,Tony Tecate. When I first started I used to sit in with him during his night show, running his board and he would even let me talk sometimes. He showed me everything there is to know about being on air and gave me some of the BEST advice that I still carry with me.
3. What would be the downside of doing the morning show?
Waking up early! Seriously, that has been a struggle for me. I have been told by other morning show hosts that I will never get used to it.
4. You're a Sacramento native. Is it interesting being such a high-profile personality in your hometown?
A little. I already have a HUGE Mexican family here, so being on air just kind of added to it. I remember going out on van hits when I was just starting out and I would always see my cousins or aunts out and they would come and say hi. Everyone would always say like "damn Bre you're famous!" Like, nah, I'm just related to every damn person in this city! LOL
5. If you could change one thing about your morning show co-host, Tony Tecate, what would you change?
His receding hair line, I think he would look good with a full head of hair!
6. What do you think Tony would choose to change about you?
F*** Tony! Who cares what he thinks! LMFAO!
7. In addition to co-hosting the KSFM morning show, you are the Music Director at your Country sister station, KNCI. What do you love about your role at KNCI?
I originally started doing the MD job to help out but then I really fell in love with the Country format and eventually took it on full time. Everything about it, the artists are so nice and easy to work with, the music is real and the all the reps are amazing! Music scheduling is something that I really enjoy. I haven't been to active in the mixing scene these past few years so I look at my scheduling as a form of that. Putting the right songs by each other to make the perfect flow.
8. If you weren't in radio, what do you think you'd be doing professionally?
Either working at a record label or running some sort of party planning business for celebrities.
9. What do you like to do in your spare time?
Sleep! No but seriously, when I get down time, I try to get as much sleep as I can. I stay on the go so it is rare for me to get a good full night of sleep. I also hang out with my immediate family a lot. We are very close.
10. Do you have any favorite TV reality shows and would you ever go on The Bachelor or The Bachelorette?
I secretly love Keeping Up With the Kardashians! They are my guilty pleasure! Anything Kardashian I love! I don't think I could ever be on the Bachelorette, I am too private. I would be too shy! haha
Bonus Questions
If you had to eat one type of meal everyday for a month, what would it be?
PIZZA! ALL DAY! EVERYDAY!
What do you think is the biggest misconception about you and your life as a radio personality?
A lot of people think that I am this "rich" person but in reality we all know radio is a passion. Living paycheck to paycheck is real! I live with my sister, her husband, my niece and nephew. Hopefully with this merger there's a merger with more money in my paycheck! LOL No, but for real!
