BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Started at KYLD (WiLD 94.9) as an intern, moved up to promotions then to weekends; Nights at KDON-Monterey; Back to SF at KMVQ (99.7 NOW) for weekends; Back at KDON as APD/MD/afternoon and weekends at KYLD.
1. What got you into radio?
Growing up listening to WiLD 107.7 in San Francisco and listening to JV and Elvis on the Doghouse is what got me into radio. Every single morning, I would listen before school. So I wouldn't miss a thing, I would record on a blank tape the rest of the show and get caught up after school. I would listen to them and think, "Man this is what they do for a living?! That's what I want to do!" Growing up, I loved listening to the radio. I loved the personalities. WiLD was my station. It was "The Bay Area's Party Station" and I wanted to be a part of that.
2. What did you dream of becoming when you were a kid?
For me it was three things. On the radio. A baseball player for the San Francisco Giants, or a California Highway Patrol Officer. An array of things, right? But those were my three dream jobs and its crazy that I get to live my dream on a daily basis! I don't take it for granted.
3. Warriors, Giants or 49ers?
I'm a fan of all three teams but baseball is my sport. I follow the Giants 365 days out of the year even during the off season. This season, they're straight trash. I still love and rep my team even though they piss me off every..single..day.
4. You're APD/MD/afternoons at KDON. Aren't you also on the air at KYLD? How did that come about?
I do Sundays on KYLD 3-7p and I love it. It's the station I grew up listening to. It's the station that I started at from interning, promotions, weekends, etc. When Mark Adams arrived, he and Travis invited me to meet with them and gave me the opportunity to do weekends back home and of course I said yes! The Bay Area is home to me, it's where I grew up, my family is out there so I love it. I'm very appreciative of both Mark and Travis for the opportunity!
5. What's one of the difficult things about programming KDON? Doesn't KDON cover three distinctly different areas in Monterey, Salinas and Santa Cruz?
Our market does cover three different areas but I wouldn't say it's difficult. We just always need to remember what makes KDON, "KDON" and that is our "secret" formula and that's what makes us THE station for the Central Coast/831. You always have to know what's hot. I'm not one to just stay in the office and base things off numbers. Number are valuable but what's more valuable is getting yourself out there with the people. See what they're feeling. What are they listening to? What song are they saving to their playlist on the FREE iHeartRadio App? (cheap plug...haha) Whats hot? What are they into? Stay relevant or get left behind!
6. What's your favorite song on KDON right now?
I love Khalid. He's dope and "Location" is still one of my favorite songs. I'm a huge fan of Calvin Harris and I'm pumped for his album. Big Sean "Jump Out The Window" is fire. And, of course, anything The Weeknd puts out.
7. If you weren't in radio, what do you think you'd be doing with your life, professionally?
Probably a police officer. I love the area I live in and would love to make a difference to the youth to help keep them off the streets. But at the same time, I'd love the opportunity to help make the Central Coast a safer place to live.
8. We know your radio job keeps you very busy but what do you like to do in spare time you have?
Just relaxing with the family. Our kids (1 and 6 years old) keep us pretty busy so any downtime I have, I love to just hang out with them. But I'm a big video game nerd so I also love just playing video games.
9. If you could be on any TV reality show or game show, which would you want to be on?
Honestly, I would want to be behind the scenes which sounds weird coming from a guy that's on the radio every damn day. Helping create something that would be successful and long running is probably more fulfilling for me than the 15 seconds of fame from acting a fool on some game show or reality show.
10. What part of your radio 'game' would you like to improve on?
All of it. There's always room for improvement. But I'd like to become a better programmer. One day I'd love to become a PD somewhere.
Bonus Questions
If you had to eat one type of meal everyday for a month, what would it be?
Shoot! My mind is telling me pizza and Mexican all damn day but my body is telling me NO! I can eat burritos, tacos and pizza forever. It's my 'go to'!
You live and work in one of the world's most scenic areas. Where's your "go to" spot to enjoy the scenery of the area?
I mean we have it all up and down the coast! From Pebble Beach to Monterey to Santa Cruz. I'd have to choose (c), all of the above! This whole market is a "go to". You can't go wrong with it! I invite everyone to visit the Central Coast and you're more than welcome to stay at our SVPP Sam Diggedy's house anytime. lol
