BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I've been very fortunate to have only worked one job other than radio. I started college radio in 1997, and landed my first radio job in summer of 1999 at KHTN (Hot 104.7)/Modesto-Merced. I moved up from intern to part of the morning show in less than a year at Hot 104.7. I left Hot 104.7 in 2004, for a morning show gig at KWYL (Wild 102.9)/Reno. I worked at Wild for five years doing mornings. Then went across the street and worked for what used to be KWNZ (Z93.7)/RENO, for about a year. Z ended up flipping formats, and I landed a job with Reno Media Group. I've been with RMG since then, which has been almost six years now.
1. What got you into radio?
I fell into radio. I didn't know what I wanted to do after high school? I always loved music, and I was even in a local Hip-Hop group in my later teen and early 20s. My DJ for our group was taking a broadcasting class and basically said radio might be my calling. I ended up taking the radio program class the next semester and the rest is history.
2. What did you dream of becoming when you were a kid?
When I was a kid I thought I was going to be a veterinarian.
3. You also co-host the morning show on your sister station KLCA (Alice 96.5). Did that start before or after you became PD at KSGG?
The morning show slot on Alice actually opened up after I was already programming Swag. I was really pushing to get on the show, after doing years of morning radio, I was itching to get back in the early morning routine.
4. Don't you have an addition to your family on the way?
Yes, a new baby is on the way in January. ETA is the 17th of January but who knows if he'll be on time?
5. What would probably surprise most people about Reno?
Reno is a place people call home. I think the biggest misconception about Reno is that it's a 'Little Vegas', and it's not. People who live here usually stay away from the casinos. We love the outdoors, the High Sierra lifestyle and our beautiful community.
6. If you weren't in radio, what do you think you'd be doing professionally?
If I wasn't doing radio, I'd probably be involved in the booming legal marijuana business.
7. We know your radio job keeps you very busy but what do you like to do in spare time you have?
In my spare time of course I'm listening to music. Going to the movies with my wife. And most likely working on an art project at home.
8. If you could be on any TV reality show or game show, which would you want to be on?
I think everyone in radio would agree that they'd love to be on the game show, Beat Shazam.
9. Who were some of your radio mentors?
I'd say my biggest radio mentor was my first PD, Rene Roberts. He helped groom me into a great radio personality, and taught me a lot about the business.
10. If you had to eat one type of meal every day for a month, what would it be?
Hands down, Mexican food. I know it's usually some of the same ingredients but it never gets boring.
