1. What got you into radio?
A college professor talked me out of trying to make movies. He said I was great and that radio was my path. His name is Paul Perry, he was doing mornings at B101 in Providence. I never had a chance to thank him, Thank you Paul. Looking back, he probably just saw some of my film projects and was trying to help me out.
2. What did you dream of becoming when you were a kid?
Shortstop for the Boston Red Sox. GO SOX!!....I mean next year.
3. Besides the heat, what was the biggest change in the move to Palm Springs?
So much...It might as well have been another country. I moved to California in 2005. I would have to say the biggest change was the people. Everyone seems easy going compared to Boston and Providence.....and the food. MAN do I miss Providence Italian food and New England seafood and pizza and Asian and Portuguese and I could go on and on.
Professionally it was a big change as well. Everything I have accomplished in my career I owe to Jerry McKenna. He was my boss from the beginning until I came to California. Not having him here it was a bit weird not only learning California but also learning a whole new system of doing everything.
4. Twenty years ago, if someone had said that you'd be living in Palm Springs, you would have said?
"Palm Springs? Great, I love Florida!"
5. What would probably surprise most people about Palm Springs?
The heat is no joke. It was over 120 degrees here this summer. It's a bit ridiculous sometimes.
6. You are also PD/morning host of the cluster's Mix 100.5. How easy is it to "switch" hats back and forth?
Back and forth isn't a problem, it's while I'm on air that it gets a little weird. Not to get too philosophical but it's like sometimes I am fighting this crazy duality of man thing. There are things I want to do on air to push the envelope and at the same time my PD brain shuts it down. It's like I have a little devil wearing headphones on one shoulder and on the other is the little angel PD saying, "no, no, no."
7. If you weren't in radio, what do you think you'd be doing professionally?
I DJ over 80 weddings a year so I would probably just take on more weddings.
8. What do you like to do in your spare time?
My 2 year old son Easton is everything. He and my wife get my spare time. When they let me, I brew craft beer. There are a ton of brew pubs around Southern California and I became a beer nerd and started brewing at home. One year my wife and I were at a bar in Boston and were drinking Sam Adams Brick Red. We were bummed when we found out it is only available in Boston and only on tap. Now that I'm brewing I can make my own.
9. If you could be on any TV reality show or game show, which would you want to be on?
I would love to have been on the original Gong Show with Chuck Barris. I actually call my news guy, Gene Nichols, "Gene, Gene The News Machine" in homage to "Gene, Gene The Dancing Machine".
10. You're a born and raised New Englander. Have you embraced Los Angeles' sports teams or is it Pats, Celtics, Red Sox and Bruins for life?
It's all Boston for life!!! Can you believe Raider fans are still yelling TUCK RULE at me when I'm wearing my Brady jersey?
Bonus Questions
If you had to eat one type of meal every day for a month, what would it be?
I could eat seafood every day for way longer than a month. When I go home to visit my parents in Boston, they know we are going out for a lobster.
How does your family best help you in being effective in your work?
On weekdays that I do a wedding at night, I'll leave the house at 5 am to do my morning show and not be home until 11pm from the wedding with no break in between. I have to get up at 4:30 am the next day and do it all over again. There have been a couple of times when I thought to myself, "I can't do this anymore" and a vision of my son popped into my head. It was like a higher power was actually showing me a picture of him. Just realizing that my family is counting on me is more than enough to keep me laser focused and working hard.
(provided by Bradley) Did you see the comeback the Patriots pulled off last Super Bowl?
Yes, I did. Tom Brady is the G.O.A.T. Yes, I realize you didn't ask a bonus question, I just felt like I needed to remind everyone of how amazing Tom Brady is.
